Cost and value
Most businesses spend somewhere between $500 and $5,000 a month on ongoing SEO, according to a survey of 439 SEO providers by Ahrefs. The price depends on how many towns and services you want to show up for and how much work your website needs. We break it down in our guide to SEO pricing for contractors.
Compare the monthly cost to what one job is worth to you. If a typical job brings in more profit than a month of SEO costs, one extra job a month covers it. If your jobs are small and you're already booked solid, SEO may not be the best use of your money yet.
Work you can see: fixes to your website, updates to your Google Business Profile, new or improved pages for your services and towns, and a report that lists what was done. Be careful with very cheap plans that can't name what you get each month.
Timing
For most contractors, the first real movement shows up in three to six months. Business Profile fixes and technical repairs can help sooner, while new pages usually take a few months before Google trusts them.
The most common reason is that page addresses changed and the old ones weren't redirected, so the pages Google knew about disappeared. Other causes are removed content and a slower site. If you're planning a redesign, keep your existing addresses or set up a redirect from each old one.
Google Business Profile and reviews
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. In practice that means picking the right categories, listing your real services, keeping hours accurate and earning a steady flow of reviews. Our Business Profile checklist walks through each part.
Ask every happy customer, ideally right after the job, and text them the direct review link from your profile. Don't offer discounts or gifts for reviews and don't only ask the customers you expect to be happy. Google's rules don't allow either.
Yes. If customers don't come to you, set your profile up as a service-area business: hide your street address and list the towns you serve instead.
Your website
Google's target is for the main content to appear within 2.5 seconds. When we tested 139 New Jersey contractor websites, 93% missed that target, so a fast site is still a real advantage.
In our tests, the most common cause was full-size photos and videos uploaded straight from a phone or camera. Extra plugins, chat widgets and booking scripts that load on every page add to it.
Usually not. Speed fixes, clearer page titles and proper service pages often help more than a redesign, and they keep the pages Google already knows. A rebuild makes sense when the site can't be fixed or doesn't work on phones.
Pages and content
Yes, for the services you want more of. A page about water heater installation can show up for that search far more easily than one long page that lists everything you do.
Only as many as you can make genuinely useful. A page for a town where you actually work, with real details about the jobs you do there, helps. Dozens of copies with only the town name changed usually don't.
It can, when posts answer questions your customers really ask, like what a repair costs or how to tell if a roof needs replacing. Posts written only to stuff in keywords rarely bring calls.
